              Responsibilities

              The Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate is seeking early career engineers to engage with our national security mission in research, development, and experimentation. You will have the opportunity to work on teams that ensure the security of the United States and its allies by: supporting the stewardship of the nation's nuclear deterrent; contributing to key nonproliferation and arms control initiatives; national-level experiments in support of the National Nuclear Security Administration's National Laboratories; working with national security partners such as the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community, and other federal agencies on important national security activities; and providing long-term environmental stewardship of the NNSS's Cold
              As a member of the S&T Directorate's Engineering Technologies division, you will work collaboratively with a diverse group of colleagues on challenging problems of national significance, with opportunities to work in the experimental field and engage with a broader team of scientists and engineers. Multiple positions are available across a spectrum of experience levels, with benefits and requirements requisite with experience and educational background.

                Key Responsibilities:

                Engineer I

                • Have experience with at least one of the following areas:

                  • Conducting experiments and research in one or more of the following areas: -nuclear weapon safety and performance assessment without nuclear testing; weapons engineering studies; advanced experimental diagnostics development and fielding; high-energy density plasmas; neutron sources and detectors; and electro-optical systems.
                  • Learning and running existing analysis codes to plan and analyze experiments and incorporate experimental data analysis techniques.
                  • Designing, drafting, and analyzing mechanical subsystems, including instrument housings, experimental fixtures, shielding, and detectors.
                  • Executing software, firmware, and control system programming of instruments, detectors, and user interfaces.
                  • Performing electronic design and analysis of integrated circuit boards, circuits, diagnostic hardware, and experimenter interfaces. - -

                  • Fulfill project objectives as a in highly multidisciplinary teams in collaboration with peers.
                  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the program.
                  • Travel based on needs of projects.
                  • Perform other duties assigned by Management.

                    Engineer II

                    • Have experience with at least one of the following areas:

                      • Conducting experiments and research in one or more of the following areas: -nuclear weapon safety and performance assessment without nuclear testing; weapons engineering studies; advanced experimental diagnostics development and fielding; high-energy density plasmas; neutron sources and detectors; and electro-optical systems.
                      • Learning and running existing analysis codes to plan and analyze experiments and incorporate experimental data analysis techniques.
                      • Designing, drafting, and analyzing mechanical subsystems, including instrument housings, experimental fixtures, shielding, and detectors.
                      • Executing software, firmware, and control system programming of instruments, detectors, and user interfaces.

                      • Developing and applying state-of-the-art dynamic experimental techniques to laboratory and field research. Areas of interest should include: x-ray and neutron radiography, high-speed photographic and optical measurements, hydrodynamics, light-gas and powder guns, pulsed power and detonation physics experiments, and instrument design and development.
                      • Performing laboratory proof of principle and field deployment of new instruments, detectors, and diagnostic capability.
                      • Performing analysis and optimization of commercial detection equipment with custom diagnostic hardware.
                      • Executing development, assembly, fielding, and data collection of complex diagnostic equipment.
                      • Perform other duties assigned by Management.

                        Qualifications
                        Engineer I

                        • Bachelor's degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees;
                        • Experience in electrical, mechanical, optical, or nuclear engineering, or a related field.
                        • Experience with scientific design, modeling, prototyping, programming, or data analysis.
                        • Experience developing innovative solutions to complex analytical problems.
                        • Demonstrated effective analytical and conceptual skills and creativity.
                        • Experience effectively working independently and in a multi-disciplinary, team-research environment to achieve multi-year goals.
                        • Demonstrated ability and commitment to valuing diversity and inclusion principles in the workplace.
                        • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to author technical and scientific reports and publications, and to deliver scientific presentations.
                        • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance.
                        • Travel based on needs of projects.
                        • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
                        • Must possess a valid driver's license.

                          Engineer II -

                          • Bachelor's degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees;
                          • Plus at least 2 years' relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge. Graduate research experience may be recognized.
                          • Or, Bachelor's degree as mentioned above AND a Master's degree.
                          • Experience in electrical, mechanical, optical, or nuclear engineering, or a related field.
                          • Experience with scientific design, modeling, prototyping, programming, or data analysis.
                          • Experience developing innovative solutions to complex analytical problems.
                          • Demonstrated effective analytical and conceptual skills and creativity.
                          • Experience effectively working independently and in a multi-disciplinary, team-research environment to achieve multi-year goals.
                          • Demonstrated ability and commitment to valuing diversity and inclusion principles in the workplace.

                            MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order -472.2, "Personnel Security". If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

                            Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, "Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites," will be conducted. -Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, "Counterintelligence Evaluation Program."

                            Annual salary range for this position is: $63,044.80 - $116,064.00.
