Schedule: Schedule varies to support 24/7 Emergency Medicine services, including 8 to 12 hour shifts Up to 10 shifts per month; flexible scheduling
Minimum Qualifications: Education: Graduate of an approved medical school; completion of an Emergency Medicine residency accredited by ACGME Experience: Minimum 3 years experience, may include residency Security: Government background check required License/Certification and Training: Active/unrestricted license from any state; Board Certified or Eligible by ABEM; BLS/ACLS/PALS and ATLS current or in the past
Job Specific Details and Tasks:
--- Perform a full range of physician services in accordance with privileges granted by the MTF. --- Direct, perform, or assist in the instruction of other health care professionals within the scope of the clinical privileges or responsibilities. --- Examine, diagnose, treat or prescribe courses of treatment within the scope of training, experience, and privileges. --- Provide preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physicals, positive health behaviors, and self-care skills through education and counseling. --- Order diagnostic tests as applicable as well as request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated. --- Technically proficient in directing and teaching other medical staff, providing educational lectures and participating in the provision of in-service training to clinic staff members. Such direction and interaction will adhere to Government and professional clinical standards and accepted clinical protocols. --- Highly encouraged to attend staff meetings to provide case discussion, continuing education, and continuous quality improvement. --- Shall perform peer review of a minimum of 10 routine cases per month --- The Emergency Services Physician shall perform a full range and spectrum of comprehensive specialty care onsite at the MTF. Workload includes the evaluation and treatment of emergent, urgent, and non-emergent patients of all ages. The Emergency Services Physician will practice within the guidelines set by the credentialing office of the 96 MDG and the Medical Director. The Emergency Services Physician's productivity is expected to be comparable to that of the other civilian and military Emergency Services physicians assigned to the same facility/similar facilities and authorized the same scope of practice. --- Shall be able to adequately perform medical procedures to include, but not limited to, the following: o Incision and drainage o Nail Trephination o Sling or swath of injuries o Bandage o Reduce dislocations and fractures when appropriate o Stabilize and evaluate cervical spine injuries as appropriate o Lumbar puncture o Pericardiocentesis o Removal of foreign bodies as appropriate o Deliver newborn/perform emergency vaginal deliveries o Perform venous punctures for lab studies and interpret results o Draw arterial blood gases for evaluation and interpret results o Suture or staple simple and multilayered lacerations o Remove sutures, surgical staples o Tube thoracotomy o Open thoracotomy o Secure and maintain an adequate airway, by such means as: oral airways; oral tracheal intubation; nasal/tracheal intubation; crico-thyrotomy (needle and surgical) o Splint and stabilize traumatic injuries to extremities o Administer intravenous, intramuscular and subcutaneous injections o Prescribe and administer medications as appropriate o Secure and maintain adequate intravenous access by peripheral and by central routes o Diagnostic Peritoneal Lavage (DPL) o Bladder cauterization o NG/OG tubes o Local anesthesia o Restraints o Procedural sedation o Selected screening ultrasound exams --- Be able to perform tasks to include, but not limited to, the following: o Coordinate with transfer/accepting facility & other Emergency Departments o Request consults appropriately o Complete all required paperwork o Obtain an adequate history, physical, assessment and plan in a timely and appropriate manner on each patient and develop treatment plan o Utilize paraprofessional staff as appropriate, including non-physician providers o Respond to cardiopulmonary arrest as appropriate o Interpret electrocardiograms and laboratory tests o Preliminary interpretation of imaging studies to include CAT scans o Direct medical care through radio communication with an ambulance o Provide discharge instructions --- The Emergency Services Physician must be able to take care of critically ill patients and perform the procedures required for critical care. --- Examine patient, render a medical assessment of their condition, and take appropriate action. --- Provide immediate evaluation and management of emergency patients. --- Provide definitive medical care to reduce the emergency medical condition and enable the patient to safely pursue follow-up care as an outpatient as required. Follow-up of abnormal laboratory and/or imaging study, reports is the responsibility of the ordering physician. Review each report in accordance with established MTF procedures. --- Respond to "Code Blue" (cardiac or respiratory arrest) medical emergency alerts within the hospital and provide resuscitation treatment until more specialized treatment arrives. Should resuscitation efforts be unsuccessful, the physician shall pronounce the patient dead and notify the next-of-kin, if the next-of-kin is physically present. Although completion of the death certificate is primarily the responsibility of the patient's primary physician, the Emergency Services physician can complete this document if all the appropriate information is available. --- Reassure and treat non-acute conditions in priority as established by medical triage. Prepare appropriate patient profile changes. --- Prepare and document appropriate history, physical examinations, and preoperative diagnosis. Maintain documentation of all treatment provided in accordance with MTF directives. --- Dispatch and provide medical control for ambulances in accordance with MTF procedures. --- Accompany emergency services technicians on ambulance runs when indicated by the nature of the emergency and in accordance with MTF leadership guidance and MTF procedures. --- Perform emergency room procedures compatible with the MTF operations capacity, supplies and equipment. --- The Emergency Services Physician shall only provide inpatient care on the floor or in the ICU if a life threatening situation evolves. The Emergency Services Physician will not write admission orders. --- The Emergency Services Physician will address patient expectations and requirements, establishes level of need and priority of care in accordance with established policies and procedures. --- Shall coordinate patient care with community health agencies and social programs. The Emergency Services Physician will facilitate continuity of care for patients. Has knowledge of a wide variety of resource agencies available in the military treatment system to ensure proper and expedient referral of the patient and/or family member. --- Shall provide immediate evaluation and management of emergency problems as they occur. --- Shall respond appropriately to clinical emergencies. --- The Emergency Services Physician may provide other health care services not specifically listed for which training/credentials are held and privileges have been awarded by the MTF Commander. --- Shall consult with medical personnel, legal authorities, and military commanders as required.
